Polycystic Ovary: May Give a False Impression of Infertility

Every female got two Ovaries. These are internal reproductive organs. These have some specific functions, classified as Exocrine & Endocrine functions. Exocrine function of ovaries is to secrete ovum and Endocrine functionof ovaries is to secrete female hormone such as Oestrogen (also known as Estrogen), Progesterone etc.

It is an endocrine disorder. It occurs to the woman of all races. In this disease, there is formation or cysts around the Ovary/ovaries. Cyst is sac filled with fluid. When there is formation of more than 10 cysts and having a diameter within 5 to 10 mm then it is called Polycystic Ovary. When numerous cysts are formed around the ovaries, the normal functions, especially the exocrine function becomes interrupted.

As we know that in case of Polycystic Ovary, the main function of ovary is interrupted, so there will be some features. The main signs & symptoms are:

• Abnormal deposition of fat (adipose tissue) in the whole body.
• Acne, specially in the face. Skin of the face become oily.
• Abnormal facial hair (Hirsutism)
• Amenorrhea or oligomenorrhea. In some severe conditions there are evidence of two to three times menstruation in a year in single subject.
• Sometimes woman becomes infertile due to this.
• Depression, agitation.
• Loss of scalp hair.

Most helpful tests are:

• Ultrasonography (USG)
• Trans-vaginal ultrasonogram
• Blood hormone estimation and hormone profile.

The key points of treating this disease are:

• Reduce the body weight, specially fatty tissue.
• Administration of low dose oral contraceptive pill
• Those who are having complication with conception, they may be advised to take Metformin. It helps ovaries to secrete ova.
• Sometimes ovarian drilling is done. This is the last way out.
