You may think that you are perfectly watching your weight, BMI etc. Probably you are not so skinny and may be somewhat cool in your daily pursuit. But there are points to ponder. There are some features that keep informing us about our nutritional status. By monitoring those features you can understand what to do and what not to. There are some common signs of malnutrition;
These are:
- Hair
- Dull, dry, thin, fine, straight
- Easily plucked/ brittle,
hair loss
- Areas of lighter and darker spots
- Face
- Generalized swelling
- Dark areas on cheeks, under and around the eyes
- Lumpy or flaky skin around nose and mouth
- Enlarged parotid gland
- Eyes
- Dull appearance
- Dry and pale or red membrane
- Triangular
- Shiny gray spot on conjunctiva
- Red and fissures eyelid corners
- Bloodshot ring around cornea
- Lips
- Red and swollen (especially on corners)
- Ulceration
- Bleeding
- Rigidity
- Tongue
- Swollen
- Purple
- Row-looking
- Sores or abnormal papillae
- Ulceration
- Bleeding
- Tastelessness or bad taste
- Bad odor in oral cavity
- Teeth
- Missing or emerging abnormally
- Visible cavities or dark spot on the teeth
- Spongy teeth
- Bleeding gums (gingivitis)
- Chills during hot or cold food/drink intake

- Swollen thyroid gland
- Rigidity of neck muscles

Skin
- Dry, flaky, swollen
- Dark with lighter and dark spots, some resembling bruises
- Tight and drawn
- Marked boney prominence

Nails
- Spoon-shaped
- Brittle
- Rigidity of muscles, stiffness of the neck

Musculoskeletal system/ Built
- Muscle wasting
- Knock-knee or bow-legs
- Bumps on ribs
- Swollen joints
- Musculoskeletal hemorrhages

Cardiovascular system
- Arrhythmias (tachycardia or bradycardia)
- Fluctuation in blood pressure. (generally hypotension)

Abdomen
- Enlarged liver
- Enlarged spleen
- Pain 2-3 inches above the umbilicus (to the left)

Reproductive system
- Decreased libido (sexual desire)
- Impotency
- Amenorrhea (no menstruation)
- Painful menstruation

Nervous system
- Irritability or agitation
- Confusion and disorientation
- Paresthesia in hands and feet (loss of sensation)
- Loss of proprioception (non-coordination)
- Decreased ankle and knee reflexes
- Loss pf concentration
- Insomnia
These are some signs that indicate whether you are malnourished or not. By keeping this in your mind, plan your food-habit, work-out, exercise and keep in touch with a doctor or at least a nutritionist… I assure your healthful living.
